Something more about it...Some brief history...
In the 1980s, Sham Shui Po started off as a market place for factory workers to sell second tier products. As the manufacturing industry shrank, it gradually became a second hand market. From 22:00 to 00:00 every day, there is no patrolling staff from Environmental Hygiene Department due to their change of shift. In this interim, illegal hawkers will set up tiny stores to sell their goods. An informal “governing regime” exists. Different groups of gangsters have controls over different parts of the Night Market and usually assign designated selling places to vendors (who paid a substantial amount to the gangsters every month). The gangsters are responsible for maintaining the order and will protect the vendors from any troublemakers (usually by the use of force). The People... Most vendors live in Sham Shui Po citizens, while the vendees live in different places and are from all walks of lives. Some look for good bargain, while others just have nothing to do at night. What you can find: A lot of second hand products are sold here, including but not limited to computers, VCDs, torches, knives, and clothes. |
